Vestaradio, create your web radio

Start a community radio station

Give your association a voice, bring your community together, get your message out.

Why a web radio for your association?

A web radio is now the simplest and cheapest way to bring a community together, cover your events and get your message out. Unlike an FM station it needs no licence from Arcom (the French broadcasting regulator), because it streams over the internet. Launching is quick, inexpensive and entirely in the hands of your volunteers. A few key steps remain.

Statutes, registration, association number: the formalities are free, and official publication has been free since 2019.

A station run by several people

Every volunteer has their own login and their own slot. The manager lets you organise presenters without anyone getting in the way.

Funding the project

Advertising monetisation lets the association earn revenue from its station, to cover its costs.

The 4 steps to your community web radio

From setting up the association to putting the stream online, here is the whole path.

1

Set up (or call on) your non-profit association

The French loi 1901 non-profit framework is ideal for a web radio with no commercial aim. The formalities are free:

  • Draw up the statutes and hold a founding general meeting
  • Register the association with the associations registry at the prefecture, or online
  • Obtain the RNA number (a W followed by 9 digits), which you need to act in the association's name
  • Publication in the Journal officiel (JOAFE) has been free since 2019
2

Declare the music (SACEM & SPRE)

Playing music means paying the rights holders. Two organisations are involved:

  • The SACEM for authors' rights. There is a community web radio package, starting at around 80 € excluding VAT per year per channel.
  • The SPRE for neighbouring rights (performers and producers) on commercial recordings.
  • Making podcasts available needs a further authorisation, from around 40 € excluding VAT a year.
3

Equip yourself to broadcast

The equipment stays within an association's reach:

  • A stable internet connection, the first priority for live shows without dropouts
  • One or more microphones, some headphones and a mixing desk
  • Possibly a better sound card in the studio computer

4

Choose your hosting & your website

The Vestaradio hosting plan streams your station around the clock and gives you the manager to schedule your shows, build your playlists and organise several presenters. You can also add a radio website and a mobile app to bring your community together.

SACEM and SPRE rates are a guide. They change and depend on your project. Non-commercial community stations can be represented before SACEM by the SNRL. Always check the current amounts with the organisations themselves.
